That Grotowski quote rings true tonight as I slog through yet another grant application. I love reading your thoughts as you experience life renewed in Paris. Miss you and Jairo!
Hi Jim, Loved reading your thoughts! We saw Han! this week at CATAC. We took friends and we were transported and changed. I was so tempted to take the Song workshop with Richards, but realized I can't really do everything I would like to do, AGAIN. Love to you and Jairo!
Donna, so good to hear from you! And very glad to know that you're continuing to support the activities at the Balch. They're working very hard. Love to you and Joe as well. Let us know when you're planning to come to the City of Light. Our neighborhood is full of ceramic studios!
Beautifully wondered, Jim! I have spent nights in Paris theatres, and not speaking the language, sought only that so familiar connection as I let the experience wash over me.
But like you, I rarely fall in love as a spectator. Because love is an action. And too often, I leave the theatre feeling like a voyeur. I know too much about what is required to make it happen. I lack the freedom to see it with naïveté and feel it without the prejudice of the familiar. It’s like trying to reconnect with a former lover. There just too much history to start a new relationship - the past informs the present and contorts the future.
Yet, every once in a while, I am transformed. Which is why we continue to believe in the necessity and the powerful force that only live theatre can provide to the willing.
You have provided that over the years. I have been the recipient of your gifts. I have been blessed by your instinctual and intellectual understanding of what theatre is meant to be and give. You have fed the souls of so many.
Your sabbatical will feed yours now. And we will all be the better for it.
I can see that 8th grade classroom (my teacher was Sister Mary Joseph). You bring it to life with your words and pictures. Thanks for sharing your experiment!
Sister Denise was Mother St. Joseph before the nuns were allowed to change their names. They all did except for Mother Claret. She just became Sister Claret. It suited her.
thanks for your musings and updates - Jairo, not sure if you remember me but I was in your classes at CWRU in 2001/2002 (emily klingensmith). i'm now back in school, getting an mfa playwriting at siu (southern illinois university) - i enjoy these reviews and keeping engaged. cheers - e.k.
Emily, thanks for letting us know that you're out there and supporting our community-building efforts. Interesting that you are now at SIU. It's a beautiful campus, but I don't know anything about their theatre program right now. Jairo will be responding to you, too. He was very happy to hear that you had reached out. Hearty greetings, Jim
Wow, I don’t remember. I may have the program somewhere still. If I find out I’ll definitely let you know.

Thanks, Wendy. Very happy to know that you're following along with us. We miss you, too!
Hi Jim, great read! I remember stage managing Tartuffe at U of Akron. Quite an experience!
Hello, Marc. I was trying to remember who stage managed the Scottish play. Do you recall?

Thank you, Cheryl. Your current journey is inspiring me a lot right now. Thank you for opening yourself so gently.
I love your writing about your journey! I hope to read your memoir someday!
Thank you, Kathy. Your support means a lot. I have not written freely in a long time and I am finding a great deal of stimulation in this experiment.
