On this day of remembrance, 26 years after Grotowski’s death on 14 January 1999, and 40 years after the arrival of Jairo to Irvine, California in January 1985, we decided to publish this month a text, written by Jairo in 1999, several months after Grotowski’s death. The text was presented at the University of California-Irvine, for a conference to honor Grotowski, where his Objective Drama Project took place from 1983-1992. The text concerns some of Jairo’s reactions to Grotowski’s text, “Performer,” one of the master’s most important statements about the final phase of his research, Art as Vehicle or Ritual Arts. This work took place primarily at his Workcenter in Pontedera, Italy from 1986 until his death. “Performer” was first published in 1988 and continues to provide a stimulating glimpse into Grotowski’s particular genius.
We also want to add that our thoughts are currently with all of our friends in Los Angeles during these difficult times. California forever holds a very special place in our hearts and in our professional and personal histories. We send you our love.
Jairo and Jim
